Like so many of us who answer the gnawing inner voice that asks “Should I get bangs?” with a resounding yes, Kourtney Kardashian was bound to eventually tire of her fringe. She's been wearing blunt, piecey bangs for a couple of months now, but with the help of hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, she's apparently growing them out in the most iconic fashion.

Giannetos posted a carousel of photos to his Instagram grid, revealing a whole new look for the Lemme founder. After weeks of stick-straight length and brow-skimming bangs, her hair has been totally reshaped into a retro, bouncy blowout.

“New ‘the YSL-haircut,’” Giannetos wrote in the caption. “It’s Farrah Fawcett it’s Fashion it’s Feathery it’s Fluffy and it’s 70s!" He adds that her glossy, darkest-brown, loose curls and newly swoopy curtain bangs have been given a boost by Great Lengths hair extensions.

    Instagram content

Emphasizing the seventies-ness of it all are her oversized Saint Laurent aviator sunglasses. We can't tell what she's wearing beneath her coat, but it wouldn't be the least bit surprising if it included dramatically flared jeans.

When Kardashian shared Giannetos's post to her Instagram story, she also tagged makeup artist Jennifer Luney Tioseco, who gave the reality TV star bronzed cheeks and shimmering nude lips—a low-key look that pairs well with her subtle off-white manicure.

Even if you don't have access to Giannetos and ample extensions, Kardashian's new style can definitely serve as guidance for when you decide to grow our your bangs. She proves a flippy, middle-parted curtain bang never fails.

The best showerhead filters are all over TikTok, and though we’re skeptical of most viral products, these particle-minimizing home gadgets take our everything showers to a cleaner, gentler level. They essentially filter out hard water contaminants like metals and minerals from your water, which can otherwise build up on your skin and hair and lead to dryness, dullness, and even an itchy scalp. “Hard water has higher levels of calcium and magnesium in it,” explains Omer Ibrahim, MD, a Chicago-based board-certified dermatologist. “While they are generally safe to drink, they can be hard on the skin and hair.”

    Our Top Showerhead Filters

    • Best Overall: Jolie Filtered Showerhead, $169
    • Best Aromatherapeutic: Canopy Filtered Shower Head, $150

    • Best Spray Settings: T3 Source Showerhead Shower Filter, $160
    • Best Budget: Kitsch The Shower Filter, $40

If you’ve been dealing with bouts of dry skin or brittle hair and have tried nearly every moisture-intensive treatment available, your existing showerhead’s filtration system (or, most likely, lack thereof) might be the root of your problem—and we’re here to fix that. Below, take a look at some of the top-tier filtered showerheads available that improve water quality and, therefore, your hair and skin.

Why it's worth it: Jolie’s Filtered Showerhead is a TikTok star that’s well worth the hype, according to Dr. Ibrahim. “While this one is on the pricier side, it is a full filter system with an aesthetically pleasing showerhead,” he says. It utilizes KDF-55 (a type of copper-zinc alloy filter) and calcium sulfite to minimize levels of chlorine, heavy metals, and minerals in your shower water for up to 90 days. After that, you can just swap in a new filter.

Why it's worth it: Canopy makes one of our favorite humidifiers for dry skin, but the brand’s Filtered Shower Head is also a favorite amongst Allure editors and dermatologists like Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist based in New York City. She previously vouched for its intensive filtration system of granular activated carbon, a copper-zinc complex, and calcium sulfite to remove contaminants. This showerhead also features a built-in felt diffuser for adding a dab of your favorite essential oil, turning your shower into a spa-like, sensory experience.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How does hard water affect my skin and hair?

Considering hard water contributes to soap scum (as in, that gross layer of grime that can build up on your shower floor if you don’t clean it often enough), it’s no surprise that it can also lead to buildup on your body and hair, according to Dr. Ibrahim. “For people who have hard water in their shower, they’ll often see a layer of soap scum on their walls–that’s due to the minerals reacting to soap to form this insoluble layer,” he explains. When that layer of “scum” develops on your body, it can exacerbate dryness and inflammation, especially for those with skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, keratosis pilaris, and even acne.

As for your hair, that layer of minerals leads to a dry, brittle texture and dull color (a major bummer if you pay for expensive color treatments). “Hard water can also exacerbate dandruff or seborrheic dermatitis,” adds Dr. Ibrahim.

How does a filtered showerhead benefit my skin and hair?

Washington, D.C.-based dermatologist Adam Friedman, MD, previously told Allure that these filters, also known as water softeners, cleanse your tap water of mineral buildup and replace them with sodium through a process called ion exchange. This process lowers the water’s concentration of mineral sediments, minimizing buildup and, potentially, irritation. To that end, “shower filters can help as long as they include a water-softening system,” says Dr. Ibrahim. These “water-softening systems” include filtration mediums such as KDF-55 (a combination of carbon and zinc) and calcium sulfite. In removing these minerals from your shower water, they can deliver calmer, healthier skin—not to mention shinier, softer hair. Consider them an investment in your long-term beauty routine.

    • Adam Friedman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Washington, D.C.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We are particularly discerning when writing about skin-care devices. This is because of the increased risks and, in many cases, the high price points, that accompany at-home dermatological tools and devices.

Each device undergoes extensive testing and must be approved by a senior member of our beauty team prior to appearing in Allure. Additionally, our editorial team consults board-certified dermatologists and cosmetic chemists about the science behind product claims and independently reviews any studies cited by brands. Testers consider performance across four primary categories: efficacy, safety (including ease of use), research and the science behind specific claims, as well as product value. To learn more information on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

The formula starts as a silky oil that swiftly dissolves makeup, SPF, and dirt, and then transforms into a gentle foam that rinses clean without leaving skin tight or dry. Pentavitin (a plant-based carbohydrate complex that mimics skin sugars and acts as a humectant) works behind the scenes to hydrate and lock in moisture for up to 24 hours, while flaxseed oil soothes —leaving skin feeling refreshed and balanced (no stripping here!), all for under $10.

This crowd-pleasing formula strikes the rare balance of deeply cleansing without tipping skin into tight, squeaky territory. A trio of barrier-supporting ceramides (1, 3, and 6-II) helps keep skin strong and resilient, while hyaluronic acid pulls moisture to the surface. Niacinamide steps in to soothe and keep redness in check, making this a smart pick for combo, sensitive, or “it changes daily” skin types. The cleansing oil itself is incredibly lightweight, making it suitable for every skin type. Our oily, acne-prone editors love it, and Joyce Park, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Washington, calls it a favorite for her sensitive, rosacea-prone skin. “The cica is super calming, and the texture is delightfully light,” she says. True to Skin1004’s minimalist approach, the formula keeps it simple with just four oils—bergamot, sunflower seed, olive fruit, and jojoba—delivering gentle yet effective cleansing without any heaviness.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What ingredients should you look for in a drugstore cleanser?

“Look for gentle surfactants, humectants like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, and barrier-supporting ingredients,” says Dr. Shokeen. If you’re acne-prone, she says that salicylic acid can be helpful for light exfoliation. “If you have sensitive skin, make sure to avoid harsh sulfates, alcohol, and heavy fragrance.”

How do you know which drugstore cleanser is right for you?

To find the best cleanser for your skin type, Dr. Spearman recommends starting by identifying your skin type and primary concerns, such as dryness, acne, or sensitivity. “Read ingredient lists rather than focusing on marketing claims and look for fragrance-free formulas if you are prone to irritation,” she says. “When in doubt, keep it simple—a gentle pH-balanced cleanser used often will outperform more aggressive formulas.”

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that’s included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best drugstore cleansers, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we’ve solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

It takes a lot to dampen the Christmas spirit at the Teigen-Legend household. Chrissy Teigen has been going all in on giving her children fun holiday activities to do, but even the best laid plans of mice and men and multi-hyphenate moms often go awry. And for the Cravings founder, that means a (literally) sweet idea turned into a cosmetic dentistry disaster.

Teigen posted a reel to Instagram on Sunday showing her adorable kiddos “growing” candy canes, in which they “plant” peppermint seeds in crushed Oreo “soil,” and they magically grow increasingly large candy canes over the course of a few days. But something backfired as Teigen prepared the extra-large candy canes for their big reveal.

Somehow—it's not entirely clear—as she was opening the candy cane package, “My tooth fell off," she laughs, indecisively covering her mouth to hide the nub that's left of her natural tooth. “It's a veneer. I have the whole piece,” she says. “I was trying to create magic. Now I have no tooth.”

If anyone can handle this situation with humor, it's Teigen, who goes to her son's holiday recital the next day with a wonky smile—and a face mask to occasionally cover it. She then ends the reel with a casual photo shoot montage set to Bruno Mars's “Just the Way You Are.”

    Instagram content

Thankfully, she didn't have to wait long to get the veneer replaced. She shared a video of herself in the dentist's chair on her Instagram stories to announce, “We are back in business, shout out to the tooth goat,” tagging Dr. Laurence Rifkin.

But as happy as she is about the replacement veneer, she also reminisced about the brief but glorious day she spent without it, posting a selfie with her eldest daughter and writing, “Was cool to say hi to my old tooth for a while hiiii old tooth!”

If she was trying to make holiday memories, she definitely succeeded—just with a little unexpected dental magic on top of the Christmas joy.

While an in-office procedure is the only way to physically tighten your skin, the best skin-tightening creams provide a hardworking dose of sag-reducing active ingredients such as retinoids, peptides, and vitamin C. With all skin care, consistency is key to seeing the best results, like improving skin laxity. (Again, said results won’t reach those of surgical levels, but will still be noticeable!) Just ask Heather Woolery-Lloyd, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in Miami. “When it comes to topicals, we can see improvement in fine lines and textural changes with consistent use [of creams],” she notes.

Like Dr. Woolery-Lloyd’s professionally administered treatments, these creams also encourage collagen production to firm and smooth skin, lending it that “tighter” look over time. Sure, they take a little longer to deliver subtler results, but they’re a serious upgrade from your usual moisturizer if you’re dealing with crepey or sagging skin and act as a preventative measure for stalling said concerns from developing further. We tapped editors and board-certified dermatologists to break down how these creams work—and what makes their favorites stand out.

Why it's worth it: SkinCeuticals' A.G.E. Interruptor Advanced is one of our favorite moisturizers for mature skin for its nourishing, balm-like feel that complements other active-packed serums. The key plumping ingredient is Proxylane, the brand’s proprietary post-biotic ferment extract. It boosts your skin’s natural levels of hydrating complex sugars, called glycan, for dewier, suppler skin. The formula also uses antioxidant-rich blueberry extract to offset the skin's decline in collagen, which can occur from aging and sun exposure. New York City-based board-certified dermatologist Dhaval Bhanusali, MD, calls this formula a "great, thicker cream that provides improvement for age-related changes, as well as hydration." Because this moisturizes skin and doesn't contain actives, you can pair it with retinoids at night for a cell-turnover, fine-line-smoothing boost. It can also extend the results of in-office tightening treatments, like radio-frequency and ultrasound.

“In the daytime, my combo skin and I adore a lightweight gel-cream, but come nighttime, I reach for a thicker cream that creates a strong seal for all of the essences and serums I slather on. SkinCeuticals' A.G.E. Interrupter Advanced is one of the all-timers—it's rich but not overly heavy, a.k.a. it melts into my skin quickly. I especially love that it's targeted towards fine lines because, while I'm not considered mature yet, I've been seeing more faint forehead lines pop up and I want to do everything in my power (even though aging is a blessing!) to maintain elasticity and glow. A.G.E. Interrupter Advanced is the perfect nightcap, hard stop.” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Why it's worth it: It’s easy for firming creams to simply flood the skin with moisture to temporarily create a smoother look, but Medik8’s Advanced Pro-Collagen+ Peptide Cream gets to work underneath the surface, helping your skin rebuild itself rather than just masking fine lines. “This cream firms the skin by stimulating collagen and elastin over time, supporting skin recovery, and defending against collagen damage. The patented Growth Factor MiniProtein mimics your skin’s natural growth factors, and its ultra-small size allows it to penetrate more effectively,” says Dendy Engelman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. If you’re noticing more lines or that your skin isn’t quite as springy as it used to be, this cream delivers the kind of collagen-supporting power that, with consistent use, helps skin look bouncier and more resilient.

“I've been a dedicated user of Medik8's Liquid Peptides Advanced serum for some time now, so I pounced on the Advanced Pro-Collagen+ Peptide Cream when the samples landed in our office. While I don't have noticeable wrinkles—yet—to track progress against, I do notice an overall plumping effect to my skin when consistently using this moisturizer. The finish is really satin-y, absorbs quickly (a through line with Medik8, I'll always award bonus points for speedy application), and I really feel like my skin texture and tone have never been better.” —Sarah Hoffmann, commerce producer

Why it's worth it: Smoothing and firming the delicate neck and chest areas isn’t something more topical creams can easily pull off, but Alastin Skincare Restorative Neck Complex Hydrating Lotion uses a patented peptide blend to get the job done. “It’s designed with TriHex Technology and antioxidants to firm, hydrate, improve elasticity, and reduce discoloration due to sun damage,” says Morayo Adisa, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Chicago, Illinois. The fast-absorbing formula helps clear out damaged collagen and elastin, making room for healthier new fibers. And if you have uneven skin tone, you’re in luck: "The addition of phyto-antioxidants, along with the inclusion of niacinamide, allows this formula to improve hyperpigmentation," adds Quynh-Giao Sartor, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Houston, Texas. The lightweight texture feels more like a serum than a cream, making it easy to smooth one pump from jawline to décolleté.

Why it's worth it: The Isdin Isdinceutics Age Contour Night Face Moisturizer may not lean on aggressive actives, but it still does an impressive job at boosting elasticity and delivering results similar to stronger formulas. This face cream swaps the harsher add-ins for hydrating hyaluronic acid and curry plant extract, which is rich in moisture-sealing antioxidants for all-around softer, bouncier skin by morning. Isdin’s night cream is also infused with carnosine, an anti-inflammatory amino acid that can help depuff swollen under-eyes. Ava Shamban, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Los Angeles, says this combination of hydrating and firming ingredients increases the volume of your skin, making it appear fuller, and compares the effect to a sponge that goes from dry to damp. "When wet, the sponge expands to occupy more space, giving a plumping effect," Dr. Shamban explains.

Why it's worth it: When 96% of your skin is on your body, it deserves just as much attention as your face—especially because body skin is thicker, less oily, and often slower to repair itself, making it more prone to laxity. SkinMedica’s Firm & Tone Lotion makes a compelling case for giving it extra TLC if you’re noticing sagginess from the neck down. “It includes green microalgae and shitake mushroom extracts to support collagen and elastin production, ginger root extract and grapefruit peel oil for antioxidant defense, and coffee arabica seed oil to help improve skin elasticity and firmness,” says Jane Yoo, MD, a dual board-certified dermatologist based in New York City, who considers it a good body cream for anyone concerned about crepiness. It also contains caffeine (which offers a temporary tightening effect by constricting blood vessels) to help skin look noticeably more lifted.

Why it's worth it: K-beauty brands have long understood the assignment: If you want to stick to a routine, the product has to feel so good that you want to put it on. The smooth, almost whipped texture of Sulwhasoo’s Essential Firming Cream EX is exactly that—plush, comforting, and instantly rewarding. “As a Korean-American dermatologist and K-beauty lover, I cannot mention skin-tightening creams without mentioning this Sulwhasoo cream. The texture is luxurious and does double duty in hydrating while smoothing out saggy skin,” says Dr. Yoo, who adds that you can see noticeable improvements in skin texture and fine lines with continued use. Bioheal’s Probioderm 3D Lifting Cream aligns with that philosophy through its probiotic-rich Probioderm complex—featuring lactobacillus ferment lysate and prebiotic sugars—which helps strengthen the skin barrier, in turn improving firmness and elasticity. “It also includes a deeply hydrating 17-peptide complex, which rejuvenates the skin and enhances elasticity,” says Dr. Yoo. With adenosine, beta-glucan, and meadowfoam seed oil in the mix, it’s a lifting cream that’s all about long-term skin health. “It has a non-greasy texture that easily absorbs on contact, not to mention a really delightful smell,” she says.

Why it’s worth it: Because we lose about 1% of collagen each year and elastin declines even faster, the jawline—which relies heavily on those structural proteins—naturally starts to soften. So, if your jaw and neck areas are looking a bit less defined than they used to, StriVectin’s Contour Restore Tightening & Sculpting Face Cream is one of the most targeted options out there. “If you have concerns about sagging skin around the jawline and downward cheek folds, the formula targets skin laxity specifically with a combination of elastin-targeting peptides, thyme extract liposomes, and glycolipids that work together to tighten and lift the skin,” says Corey L. "Retinoids like this one can even out skin tone, increase collagen production, and even treat acne and acne scarring," says Angelo Landriscina, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. Neocutis Bio Serum Firm "contains a blend of proprietary peptides and human growth factors, as well as hyaluronic acid to restore skin hydration and boost collagen," says Dr. Chang. It's the growth factors that make this formula unique: They encourage cells to revive their skin cell functions, like cell turnover and collagen production, making this a great pick for anyone with irritated skin or a disrupted skin barrier.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a cream that really tightens skin?

Again, a firming cream can help smooth fine lines and wrinkles and improve elasticity—as in, giving skin some bounce and suppleness—but no topical formula can actually tighten skin, which requires collagen remodeling on a much deeper level.

Still, certain ingredients can help, with retinoids being among the best. These are "vitamin A derivatives that can increase skin cell turnover and stimulate collagen," says Dr. Chang. "Retinoids have been shown to clinically reduce the appearance of fine lines and improve skin texture and complexion." Sensitive skin types should keep in mind that retinoids can be irritating, so be wary and patch-test before applying. If you’re too reactive to retinoids pregnant and/or breastfeeding, or want another active to enhance your existing retinol, Dr. Chang also recommends peptides. These short chains of amino acids improve skin hydration and support collagen production, leaving skin feeling more firm and supple over time.

On the antioxidant side, vitamin C, and niacinamide also promote collagen production and reduce the oxidative damage that can break down the skin’s protein, leaving skin loose and crepey over time. Finally, "Hyaluronic acid is a humectant that attracts and retains moisture in the skin, helping to plump and hydrate the skin to give a more youthful appearance," adds Dr. Chang.

The best ingredients may ultimately depend on your skin type. For instance, if your skin is dehydrated, consider using formulas with glycerin, squalane, or hyaluronic acid, whereas people with sensitive skin might want to use peptides instead of retinol.

What do dermatologists recommend for tightening skin?

If you want truly unmissable skin-tightening results, visit a board-certified dermatologist. There are two routes of tightening skin in the office: ultrasound and radiofrequency. These "stimulate collagen on a deeper plane to tighten and lift saggy skin more effectively," says Dr. Chang.

Dr. Woolery-Lloyd is a fan of Ultherapy, which "uses high-frequency ultrasound to tighten skin," she says. That ultrasound energy heats the very deep layers of skin, triggering the body's wound response. Meanwhile, radiofrequency devices, such as Thermage, also reach the deeper layers of skin, heating it to trigger new collagen production.

For our list of the best skin-tightening creams, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from two dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

If there's ever a time to go all out with sparkly, shiny fingertips and toes, it's the holidays! Just ask Demi Lovato, whose multicolored, gem-studded “modernist holiday” manicure looks straight out of a retro celebration.

Lovato's nails were the work of her go-to nail artist, Natalie Minerva, and were reminiscent of “vintage Christmas lights." We absolutely see the vision; there's something very mid-century modern about the gemstones' color and shape, like those old-school bulb lights blinking on a beautifully decorated tree or along the edge of a rooftop.

To start, Minerva shaped the musician's nails into soft, medium-length almonds, then applied OPI's Bare My Soul, a sheer nude, as the neutral base. Atop that, she placed a handful of multicolored gems in various shapes and sizes, including long rectangles and teeny circles in shades of blue, red, smoky purple, and teal. Each nail was home to anywhere from two to four gems in varying placements. The manicure is definitely glittery, twinkly, shiny, and sparkly, but it's also pretty subtle and doesn't feel too holiday-coded; you could easily wear it for New Year's Eve, on vacation, for a wedding, or whenever you want to take a simple manicure up a notch or three.

    Instagram content

This is Lovato's second sparkly set in a week; previously, she and Minerva collaborated on a diamanté outline set with rhinestones completely encircling each coffin-shaped nail. (Bare My Soul was the base color for that mani too, and Minerva told Allure the whole process only took abour 45 minutes.) And the It's Not That Deep singer isn't alone in their love of colorful gemstone manicures, either! Over the summer, Megan Fox and manicurist Brittney Boyce debuted a silver chrome set decorated with gems that looked like the coolest vintage costume jewelry, and prior to that, actor Kat Dennings flexed her DIY skills with stick-on jewels all over her nails. You've still got a few days to decide on your holiday manicure if you haven't already, so why not make your nails look as pretty as the presents and twinkly lights?

Why it’s worth it: Sold as singles or trios, ColourPop’s Super Shock Shadows are the kind of sparkly staples you’ll keep reaching for again and again. The pigment is seriously next-level, the shade range is massive (38 and counting), and the blend is effortless. Even better? They cost less than $10 each, but you’d never guess it from the way they blend. The cream-to-powder formula melts onto lids, sets in place, and lasts all day without creasing. According to New York City-based makeup artist Amanda Gabbard, Colourpop shadows are “incredibly blendable and just feel luxurious.” Unlike some shimmery shades that look dull once applied, these deposit bold, almost-metallic color with just one swipe. For the most intense swipe, we like using our fingers or a flat, firm brush. For a sheer, soft wash of shimmer, opt for a fluffy brush.

“The Colourpop Supershock shadows are my go-to when I’m doing a shimmery look. They have sheen and glitter that looks so pretty on the lid. I love that these are buildable so you can do a light wash of color or really pack it on. I have these in so many shades and love how easy they are to apply and blend out with your fingers.” —Katherine Gunderman, associate social media manager

Why it’s worth it: E.l.f. really earns the name here: The Perfect 10 Eye Shadow Palette offers a smart mix of velvety mattes and iridescent shades that instantly brighten the lids, according to Gobbard, which lend themselves to nearly limitless possibilities. Even better, the mattes are richly pigmented and easy to blend, so there's none of that dry, crumbly fallout. Whether you’re going for a soft wash of color in the crease or layering multidimensional shades for something bolder, this palette makes it almost impossible to miss.

Why it’s worth: When shopping for eye shadow for mature skin, a formula that keeps fine lines in mind is key. That’s exactly why Los Angeles-based makeup artist Renée Loiz is a fan of the Maybelline New York City Mini Palette. “It blends beautifully into textured lids,” she says. The creamy mattes and shimmers both buff out seamlessly, softening the look of wrinkles rather than emphasizing them. With eight different colorways ranging from everyday neutrals to party-ready shades, this palette “consistently delivers blendable, wearable colors with impressive payoff,” adds makeup artist Alexa Persico (she notes that the mattes in particular perform well above their price point).

Why it’s worth it: Everyone needs a swipe-and-go eye shadow stick for rushed mornings. Gabbard swears by L’Oréal Paris’s Paradise Le Shadow Stick for its “silky-smooth finish that glides on easily and never pulls on the eyelid’s delicate skin.” The formula is buildable, so it never looks too thick or cakey, and you can layer it on whenever you want a little extra shimmer. “It’s truly a failproof item,” she says. Available in 14 shades, each one delivers rich color that’s transfer- and smudge-resistant—meaning you get impressive payoff and easy blendability, with or without a brush.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between drugstore eye shadows and more prestige brands?

“The main differences between drugstore and prestige eye shadows typically come down to pigment refinement, wear time, and packaging,” says Loiz. “However, brands like Juvia’s Place are proving that drugstore formulas can perform just as well as high end options.” In fact, many makeup artists often reach for drugstore shadows first. “Drugstore formulas today offer excellent payoff for everyday looks, especially in mattes and basic shimmer tones,” says Persico. She notes that they also tend to offer more accessible color ranges for beginners and impressive quality at an affordable price point—making experimentation feel low-risk. “Honestly, in many cases, the average person won't notice a huge difference in day-to-day wear, especially if you use a good eye primer and the right brushes,” Persico adds.

How do you pick the best drugstore eye shadow?

New York City-based makeup artist Jennifer Nam previously told Allure that powder eye shadows tend to work best for most people, thanks to their seamless blendability. With the right powder, you can build color gradually, without any harsh lines. That said, if you have oily lids, a cream eye shadow stick or liquid formula may be a better fit. Creams are also a smart choice for mature skin, as “they have a smoother texture and are less likely to settle into fine lines and wrinkles,” New York City–based makeup artist Lisa Aharon previously told Allure. She favors matte finishes in particular, noting that they create a softly diffused look that’s more forgiving on texture.

How we test and review products

Before reviewing any makeup, we ask questions about a number of factors: What ingredients are in it? Does the brand offer a wide, inclusive shade range with all skin tones and undertones? Is it safe for readers who have sensitive skin or wear contact lenses? Is it on the affordable side or more of a splurge? Is the packaging consciously designed or needlessly wasteful?

For our review of the best eye shadows, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, contributors, and makeup artists. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product's performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete review process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness, a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine, or you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from are folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.
